We are delighted to highlight a new article by one of our Online Certificate students, Jakub M. Kwiescinski. “Merit Ptah, “The First Woman Physician”: Crafting of a Feminist History with an Ancient Egyptian Setting” has just been published by the Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences (https://doi.org/10.1093/jhmas/jrz058). In his essay, Kwiescinski explores the history of the ancient Egyptian Merit Ptah, who had been cited as “the first female physician”. he shows that she never existed, being created in the 1930s through a scholarly error, and then amplified and endlessly reproduced via the Internet. It’s a great cautionary tale for students about not believing everything you read on Wikipedia.
