Admissions – Online Program in the History of Medicine

The Department of the History of Medicine offers a suite of graduate-level online courses. Students may take individual courses or pursue a Certificate or MA Degree in the History of Medicine.

Anyone who has completed a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and whose English skill level meets our requirements is eligible to take graduate level courses with us.

You can apply to take up to four courses before committing to the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate or Master of Arts tracks. Any credits earned in the Online Program of the History of Medicine are eligible to be applied toward one of our two degree tracks. The Certificate program can be completed fully online. Please note that while our courses are fully online, all require both synchronous and asynchronous participation. The Masters program requires a one-week onsite Practicum in Baltimore but is otherwise fully online.

To be eligible to apply to the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate or Masters program, you must first take the course entitled Introduction to the History of Medicine. Your performance in this course is crucial to acceptance into the Certificate or MA program.

Our courses are eight weeks each with two terms per traditional university semester for a total of four terms per year academic year. We do not offer summer or winter term courses at this time. Our courses are typically offered on a 2-year rotation; please consult the Upcoming Courses page for more information.

For further questions or requests to speak with one of our faculty, consider joining us at one of our virtual open houses or contact us at ihomonline@jhmi.edu.

Tuition fees for the Academic Year 2026-27 are $4320 per 3-credit course.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate and Master of Arts students pay a one-time Matriculation Fee; that fee is currently $740.

The online MA consists of 36 credits for an approximate total tuition cost of $51,842. The online Post Baccalaureate Certificate consists of 18 credits for an approximate total tuition cost of $25,921. The exact cost will depend on the sum of the tuition rates in the years you take courses.

We welcome students from all over the world to our program.

Ours is a graduate program, so you must have received an undergraduate degree, often referred to as a bachelor’s degree, in order to enroll.  However, we recognize that educational systems differ, with different pathways to degrees so please contact us if you have any questions about your eligibility at ihmonline@jhmi.edu.  Most applicants from countries where English is not the official language must submit scores of an English language proficiency test – either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) are accepted.  Usually, students admitted to our program have minimum scores as follows:

TOEFL  Minimum Scores

  • Computer: 250
  • Paper: 600
  • Online: 100
In the course registration form,  use Institution Code 5316 (JHU  PhD MEDICINE)
IELTS Minimum Score of 7 In the course registration form,  provide your IELTS TRF number  and score
TOEFL/IELTS Exceptions

Admissions will waive this requirement for applicants only if:

  • an applicant has completed a four-year degree from an accredited US institution.
  • an applicant is from a country listed on this quick reference list.
  • please email us at ihmonline@jhmi.edu with any questions.

The tuition for international students is the same as for students residing in the US.

On Site Requirements

All MA students are required to attend the weeklong Practicum course prior to graduation. International Master’s students coming to JHU for the Research Practicum should obtain an I-20 which will allow them to apply for F-1 student visa status.  For I-20 application instructions, please contact the Office of International Services at intl-students@jhmi.edu.

Applications for the online part-time Post-Baccalaureate Certificate or Master of Arts in the History of Medicine are accepted once a year with a deadline of December 15th.

Students are required to successfully complete our online course 150.722 Introduction to the History of Medicine in order to be admitted to the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate or Master of Arts tracks. All students are eligible to take up to four courses as a non-degree student before enrolling in a degree track. All courses taken as a non-degree student are for credit and will count toward either the Certificate or MA should you be accepted into either program.
