The Department of the History of Medicine at Johns Hopkins has multiple degree tracks: on-site PhD in the History of Medicine, on-site Masters in Critical Approaches to Science, Technology, and Medicine, and an Online Program in the History of Medicine including Masters, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, and Non-Degree. PhD in the History of Medicine (On-Site)

We recommend that all folks interested in applying attend or watch the video of one of our general open houses, attend an open house with the professor they’d hope to work with, and attend one of our colloquia series, all of which take place each Fall. CAST-M (Critical Approaches to Science, Technology, and Medicine) On-Site Masters

CAST-M is a small program that provides extensive personalized support to MA students who aim to pursue further doctoral study. Two fully-funded positions are available each year. We recommend that all folks interested in applying attend one of our virtual open houses detailed on our Admissions page.

Online Program in the History of Medicine
Non-Degree Deadline: Ongoing
Certificate Application Deadline: December 15, 2024
MA Application Deadline: December 15, 2024
Our online program is run a little differently than most. We are a fully part-time program where students can choose to take up to four individual courses, apply to the Certificate, or apply to the MA. All students begin by taking courses as a non-degree student as completion of the 3-credit Introduction to the History of Medicine course is a prerequisite for apply to the Certificate or MA. Introduction to the History of Medicine is offered twice a year in Term 1 in the Fall (usually beginning late-August) and Term 4 in the Spring (usually beginning in mid-March).
